ES1: Highwood River - Alberta Fishing
Highwood River is a mountain stream in southern Alberta rising in the Kananaskis area and flowing east toward the Bow River; nearest town High River, south of Calgary. Bait is banned throughout and seasons vary by segment: headwater reaches (Storm and Mist confluence downstream to the Kananaskis Country boundary, including most tributaries except Storm Creek) have summer and fall open periods (June 16–Aug 31 and Sept 1–Oct 31 for different reaches), the mainstem from the K‑Country boundary downstream to 500 m above the mouth (and most tributaries except Sheep River) is open June 16–Oct 31, and the lowest mainstem within 500 m of the Bow is open year‑round. Species limits vary by reach: headwater sections generally prohibit other trout but allow brook trout 2 fish; mountain whitefish retention is 5 over 30 cm in summer headwater areas and on much of the mainstem open June–Oct, while in some fall headwater reaches and in the lowest 500 m of the mainstem mountain whitefish (and in that lowest section walleye, northern pike and burbot) have zero retention.
